Tea Party and Racism- It Walks Like a Duck

I’ll just go ahead and acknowledge the elephant in the room right upfront.

The Tea Party is a “party” built on racism and hate.

Period.

If you simply oppose Obama’s policies, you are a Republican or an Independent… perhaps you belong to the Green Party…

… But if you are a member of the Tea Party, you have joined a party full of people who are simply fighting for the right to be openly racist and homophobic.

One Saturday in late March, a group of teabaggers Tea Party members gathered on Capitol Hill to protest Obama’s Healthcare Reform package.

Nothing wrong with that, right?

Ha.

Georgia congressman and old school civil rights veteran John Lewis found himself taunted with chants of “Nigger! Nigger!” as he came to work that day. He said the entire scene was reminiscent of some of the darkest days of the 1960s.

Massachusetts Senator Barny Frank, who is openly gay, was blessed with screams of “Faggot!” as he walked past.

Remember, folks…

… This was a protest of Healthcare Reform legislation.

It wasn’t meant to be a gay-and-black-hating lynch mob…

Or was it?

The scene certainly looked as if it was becoming a mob, as opposed to a peaceful protest, with one person being injured and another arrested.

If I am wrong, and the Tea Party movement is not simply a group of racist pricks, where then is the outrage? Why hasn’t a party member emerged, shaking his/her fist in anger over the gross misrepresentation of this organization?

There isn’t any outrage, at least among the teabaggers there isn’t.

Our black President is making good on the promises that got him elected to the highest office of the land… promises to minorities and homosexuals… promises that some people will go to desperate lengths to make sure he never has the opportunity to keep.

I agree with the premise that being against healthcare reform does not automatically make one a racist…

… But more and more, it appears that’s exactly what belonging to the Tea Party means.

Clearly the Tea Partiers cannot stand on the merits of their anti-healthcare arguments. They have to resort to hate-filled rhetoric and scare tactics in order to make their voices heard.

It’s simply another branch of the KKK.

Wear it proud, Teabaggers.

We’re watching you.

Obama, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and Lame Excuses

Oh, Obama, you’re breakin’ my heart!

To say the least, I am extremely disappointed in Obama’s recent flip-flop on gay rights- most specifically, the military’s discriminatory Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy.

If he keeps this up, he’s gonna become nothing more than just a regular ol’ politician in my eyes.

That’s a heartbreaking thought.

Back in January Obama’s Communications Chief, Robert Gibbs, held a question and answer sessionon YouTube. One of the questions asked was whether or not the President intended to repeal the current policy regarding gays in the military.

Gibbs’ response?

A resounding yes.

Yes, yes and hell yes.

Now, however, we’re hearing something a li’l different, and it’s coming straight from the horse’s mouth.

Obama, it seems, doesn’t think the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is something he can do on his own… he says the legislative branch really needs to tackle this one, not him.

Sigh.

I believe I’m both getting whiplash and smelling some really rank B.S. all at once.

Yuck.

This guy can introduce a health care bill, a huge climate control bill, stimulus packages and everything else…

… But Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is too big a challenge?

Sorry, Mr. Prez.

I’m not buying it.

In fairness to Obama, he makes no bones about the fact that he still supports a change in the law- and that he’d like to see the change sooner, rather than later- but one kinda’ gets the impression that this isn’t the type of hot-button issue he wants to get behind right now…

… And is therefore deciding, not so gracefully, to pass the buck.

I wonder specifically, what “change” he’d like to see take place?

Beyond that, the whole thing just sounds disingenuous.

He certainly didn’t just wait for congress to decide it was time to act when he’s wanted to address other things that have been important to him during his short time in office.

He’s much more of a go-getter than that.

At least when the issue at hand is an important one- to him, at least.

I don’t know…

… Just doesn’t sit right.

Trolley Drivers, Transgender Employees and Trash

The headline screams, “Report: Boston Trolley Driver Was Hired With Transgender Minority Status”.

Huh.

I think Fox News has just taken the prize for the most inconsequential headline of the century.

It’s amazing to me how “mainstream” media will take an actual story- in this case, a real-life tragedy- and spin it into the most irrelevant drivel imaginable.

In Boston, recently, a trolley driver ran a red light, smashing into another trolley. This action resulted in serious injuries of more than 50 passengers… and was ultimately determined to be the result of the driver texting his girlfriend and not paying attention to his job.

Personally, I say fire the man.

He wasn’t concentrating on his job. He didn’t put the safety of his passengers first, and was instead putzin’ around on his cell phone with his girlfriend. This is negligence, and the man deserves to be have both his employment terminated and to be criminally charged for causing this accident.

Sure, it could have been worse… but it also could have been altogether avoided, had Mr. Trolley-man been concentrating on his job, and his responsibilities.

As it turns out, he wasn’t , and needs to suffer the consequences of being a moron.

That being said, what the hell does his “transgender” status have to do with anything where this story is concerned? And more importantly, why was this one of today’s top stories on Fox News?

First and foremost, shame on the state of Massechusetts for not protecting this man’s privacy. Rather than stand up in the name of human decency and protect its employee’s privacy, it broadcasts- nationally- that this trolley driver is actually a post-op woman who was hired as a result of affirmative action.

As if it makes a difference.

Unfortunately, due to irresponsible journalism, as well as actions made on behalf of the Massecusetts Bay Transportation Authority, we’ve just given closed-minded dum-dums another reason to hate on- and hurt- another human.

I can see it now- hillbillies the world over are nowthinking… “Well that’s what that stupid trolley company gets… everyone knows better’n to hire RuPaul”.

Ugh.

Fox News really does make my blood boil.

They sanction, condone and inflame idiocy- and worse, bigotry- as if the hiring of a transgender person had one single thing to do with this accident.

They do this on purpose- piss the rednecks of America off in some form or fashion- and then just sit back and watch the resulting bullshit unfold.

If this trolley worker finds himself attacked in the street- harmed in any way- I hope the likes of Fox News, and any other “news” provider that reported on this employee’s sexual orientation, understands that they are culpable.

Fox News has provided the fire… let’s see which jackasses supply the gasoline.

Carrie Prejean, Crowns and Closed Minds

Let’s talk about Ms. Carrie Prejean, shall we?

For those who’ve been living under a rock, she was this year’s Miss USA pageant’s runner up- the current Miss California USA- who has recently found herself embroiled in a whole lot o’ controversy.

During the pageant, celebrity (and openly gay) judge Perez Hilton asked Prejean to explain her views on same-sex marriage.

The contestant was very forthright, explaining that she believes in marriage in the “traditional” sense- as in, between a man and a woman.

Thus, the controversy.

Since that fateful night, Carrie Prejean has seen her name and her character mecilessly dragged through the mud.

Well-known people- especially celebrities- have been quite outspoken in their outrage. Michael Musto (a columnist for the Village Voice) even went as far as to compare Prejean to Klaus Barbie… a notorious Nazi war-criminal who was responsible for the deaths of about 4,000 Jews.

Ouch… Harsh, much?

All this anger is completely misguided, and misdirected- and certainly doesn’t win many points for left-wingers (such as myself) who claim to be all about the preservation of personal freedoms.

Anyone who has read anything I’ve written on the subject of homosexuality knows that I am a supporter of Gay Rights. I believe that same-sex marriage should be legalized in all 50 states.

I am completely unapologetic about my views on the topic.

Obviously, I do not have the same opinion as Ms. Prejean when it comes to this particular subject.

She is, however, being attacked for the wrong reasons.

Just as I have the right to express my opinion in support of gay marriage, Carrie Prejean has the right to express her opinion as well- even when, or maybe especially when- her views are not the same as mine.

This is the U.S., for cryin’ out loud.

She was not wrong for answering Perez’s question honestly.

Perez Hilton, on the other hand, came across as a complete idiot.

I realize he wasn’t going to be happy with Prejean’s response.

But to act shocked?

Give me a break.

His entire home state of California- Carrie Prejean’s home as well- just passed Proposition 8 less than a year ago- banning same-sex marriage- and yet Hilton acted as if he was surprised that this is a controversial issue.

He knew better.

Rather than take issue with someone for expressing their honest opinion- something the Constitution affords all of us the right to do- how about taking issue with the fact that she is now a spokesperson for the National Organization for Marriage?

This is a group that actively lobbies to “protect” marriage, fighting to keep homosexuals from being allowed to wed.

It is an organization that’s sole purpose is to make sure that an entire group of fellow human beings- gay people- never enjoy the same rights that the rest of us take for granted.

Personally, I will never have a problem with someone who has a different opinion than me.

I will always, however, have a problem with a person who works to take fundamental rights away from others.

Ironically, it is Ms. Prejean herself who best described my own views on this issue. When Carrie appeared on the “Today Show” on April 30th, Matt Lauer interviewed her, asking if she thought she should have held “her fire” when asked about gay marriage. Her response:

No. I think this is a huge issue right now. People are very passionate about this issue and I think that regardless of our opinions, Matt, I think that we just need to respect each other, even when we disagree. It’s all about respect. (Emphasis added)

She is absolutely correct.

Where’s the respect for another’s opposing views?

A reader once commented to me-

It seems there is such a hard push from one side over what they see as inequality that they are in effect pushing so hard that they may become and in some cases already are oppressive.

The fact that he’s correct- and that he’s referring to people whose views and visions I always believed I shared is shameful.

Dick Cheney, Irony and The Mortally Wounded GOP

Dick Cheney thinks it would be a mistake for the Republican Party to ‘moderate’ itself in an attempt to save itself from slowly dying.

This is about fundamental beliefs and values and ideas … what the role of government should be in our society, and our commitment to the Constitution and constitutional principles,” Cheney said in an interview with North Dakota radio host Scott Hennen Thursday, according to a transcript.

“You know, when you add all those things up, the idea that we ought to moderate basically means we ought to fundamentally change our philosophy,” Cheney also said. “I for one am not prepared to do that, and I think most of us aren’t. Most Republicans have a pretty good idea of values, and aren’t eager to have someone come along and say, ‘Well, the only way you can win is if you start to act more like a Democrat.'” –CNN Political Ticker, May 7, 2009

How ironic that Cheney today finds himself arguing for, claiming to support people’s constitutional rights when he fought so desperately during eight years of the Bush Administration to  single handedly destroy them.

This isn’t the Party that protects rights… it has made a name for itself by destroying them.

To list a few…

  • Human rights- by torturing people who do not share “American” beliefs
  • Women’s rights- by attempting to do away with a woman’s right to choose her own reproductive path, and giving a cluster of cells inside her body more consideration than the living, breathing woman whose body they reside in
  • Religious rights- by attempting to silence non-right leaning Christians, by perpetuating hatred for Muslims and others, by shoving a narrow doctrine down the throats of people the world over
  • Gay rights- by actively shaming homosexuals and seeing to it that they do not enjoy the same treatment or benefits of their heterosexual counterparts
  • Minority rights- by fighting against progress, and actively seeking to do away with the very protections (such as affirmative action) that can help our nation achieve racial parity…

The list is endless, really.

I wonder if Dick even realizes that it is his party’s philosophies, ideals and “fundamental beliefs” that are causing the problems- causing their recent and overwhelming defeat-  to begin with.

People, with little exception, do not inherently subscribe to the GOP belief system- a system that systematically destroys the freedoms of so millions… and yet, this is exactly what the Republican Party is fighting to maintain.

Protection for the few, persecution of the many.

If Dick Cheney has his way, that is.

This party, for so long, has been the one to set the narrow standard of what it means to be an American.

You’re either with them or you’re against them.

Not too long ago, to be against them was a dangerous thing.

It was not ok to simply have philosophical differences… to do so was un-American, it was traiterous, it was downright dangerous.

Our country, at long last, is changing.

I’m happy for it.

I hope Dick Cheney eventually grasps the fact that in large part due to his actions, his philosophies- his ideals- and his very Party are an endangered species.

It begs the question…

… Is he with us, or against us?

He has drawn his line in the sand.

Joe The Plumber, Queers and Honkies

Joe the Plumber, while not my most favorite person in the world, certainly provides me endless entertainment.

For that reason, he can’t be all bad.

Well, that’s not completely true.

He certainly is fun though!

Most recently, Joe was hatin’ on gay people… enjoying his favorite past-time of judging others in the name of God.

My, my, my.

What a Christian thing to do.

He’s had friends, you know, in the past, who are gay… and he’s cool with them and all…

… but he’d never let those “queers” around his kids.

He even took the time to defend his use of the word “queer”, claiming it is not a slur, nothing derogatory.

It simply means “strange” or “unusual”… it’s not really really ignorant, like calling a white person a honky, for example.

Cuz that’s what gay people are, after all.

Queer.

Funny, considering good ol’ Joe is much more queer- as in strange and usual- than any gay person I’ve ever known.

I wouldn’t think twice about allowing someone who’s homosexual around my children.

No way in hell, however, is Joe the Plumber ever gettin’ anywhere near ’em.

Haggard, Hatred and Homos

Ted Haggard, unfortunately is doing no favors for the gay community.

The embattled (and quite conflicted) man has lost his post as the president of National Association of Evangelicals, as well as his position as head pastor of the New Life Church.

His story made headlines and plunged him head-first into a nation-wide scandal when it was revealed that he paid a male prostitute- numerous times- for sex and methamphetamine… all while supposedly handling his business as Man of God Extraordinaire, devoted husband and father.

In recent days Haggard has admitted to another sexual liaison. He says it was during his tenure with New Life Church- this time with a 20 year old male volunteer. He claims this is further evidence of the “compulsive behavior” that ruled him during “that time” of his life.

Ted Haggard is- at least in part- a victim.

I truly feel sorry for him.

That being said, I am terribly disappointed that he has chosen not to use his personal experiences as an opportunity to explain the truth about homosexuality.

Instead he prefers to perpetuate a climate of shame and self-hate.

He has been on numerous television shows granting interviews, and even has an HBO documentary airing soon. The emerging theme is the life of a man whose soul hasn’t grown an inch… a man who loves himself no more than he did when he was hiding his true identity from the world, his wife, and his children.

This is a man who truly despises himself for his inherant homosexuality… a trait that he knows all too well can never be fixed, changed or prayed away.

Yet he still pretends to believe otherwise… if he just prays a little harder, reads scripture a little more often… Ricky Martin will suddenly become less attractive to him than Cindy Crawford.

He  claims a therapist told him that he is “heterosexual with complications”.

Dude- You’re gay.

Just stand up and say it.

What a sad, sad existence he has instead created.

He put himself in a virtual prison… and rather than use this massive national forum he has garnered for himself to break out of jail, to finally be free… not to mention freeing thousands of other conflicted homosexuals in the process…

… He has instead chosen to continue living behind bars.

How truly sad.

I realize Haggard has his faults… massive ones… not the least of which has been his being anything BUT a loving, committed spouse. His wife has the right to be absolutely livid with this man… though she claims she knew about his “struggles”- struggles directly related to his attraction to men- for years. She chose to marry him in spite of this knowledge… but he chose to make life-long vows to this woman.

He should suffer the consequences of the damage he has done to his marriage and his family.

However, he has been handed the perfect opportunity to explain to the world- especially to right-wing evangelical Christians- that in spite of all his efforts, all his praying and soul searching…

… He is still gay.

He didn’t choose to be this way.

He simply is.

Ted Haggard has spent the majority of his life struggling with himself, his God, his church, his culture, his country… because the man who he really is… the REAL Ted Haggard… is homosexual…

… And that reality doesn’t play out well in the world he has created for himself- a world full of judgmental hateful bigots.

The resulting damage is catastrophic.

All one needs to do is watch him… I recommend viewing his recent interview with Larry King… to know that this man hates himself as much as he ever has.

He still hopes he can get on his knees and pray his way out of his attraction to men.

Why has he not figured it out, after all these years, that it isn’t going to happen? Why is he not on a quest to learn how to love himself?

Denial is indeed a powerful animal.

If Ted Haggard lived in a world where he was accepted for who he really is… a world in which he could both love and serve his God without fear that his personal understanding of himself as a gay man would sentence him to eternal damnation in hell… a world in which he did not have to hate himself for that which he cannot change…

… Perhaps things would have been a little different… a little better…

I will pray for Mr. Haggard.

I will pray that he stops apologizing for who his is, for who God created him to be… and start living and loving himself.

He deserves that much, if nothing else.

Barack Obama, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and the Irony of the Brave Cowards

It seems Obama is gearing up to deal with yet another controversial issue that is near and dear to my heart.

Recently, during a YouTube question and answer session with Robert Gibbs (Obama’s incoming White House Press Secretary), a viewer asked if this would be the administration that repeals the country’s  “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gays in the military.

The answer…

Yes.

A resounding yes.

I never understood why we had to have this ridiculous policy to begin with, but I do realize that there are millions of fearful people in this country… otherwise kind-hearted people who don’t realize that their fear of that which they don’t understand has made them bigots…

… Rather than try to have a little compassion, perhaps educating ourselves a bit… we tend take the easy way out, as a result becoming cowards.

Gay people have always fit neatly into the “we don’t understand” category.

Why is it that to so many people, a simple lack of understanding equals carte blanche permission to hate, judge and discriminate?

Oh well.

Back to the subject at hand…

I’ve heard all the arguments- absolute nonsense- that by allowing gays in the military, their assigned unit’s “cohesion” is in jeopardy… as in, if a gay man falls in love with another man in his unit, he may sacrifice the good of the unit’s mission by putting his lover’s safety higher on the priority list than that of the unit’s…

You know…  should they find themselves in that situation.

Bullshit.

That argument became moot when the military began allowing men and women to serve in the same unit… would not a straight guy who’s in love with a woman in his unit potentially act in the exact same fashion?

Huh…

… And yet, nobody’s raising the argument in that particular scenario, now are they?

The bottom line is that lots of straight people feel “icky” that they may be serving- eating, sleeping, soldiering- with a member of the same sex, someone who could potentially develop the hots for them.

That makes all kinds of sense.

Or not.

It’s ironic how some of the world’s bravest men and women so staunchly support a policy that gives them an excuse to be cowardly.

Scaredy-cats.

The good news is that times are changing, and we finally have a leader who is truly and unapologetically against discrimination- in all its ugly forms.

That truly is something to be proud of.

Proposition 8, Gay People and God-Sanctioned Orgasms

I wasn’t sure if I should really touch this subject or not…

… But seeing as I’ve never been one to keep my mouth shut, here I am- and I intend to touch the hell out of this thing.

Proposition 8, in California, has passed.

That’s old news of course, but I’m just now getting around to talking about it, so let’s just jump right in.

For those of you who have lived in a cave for the past 8 days, Prop 8 is California’s Gay Marriage ban.

I guess I was a little surprised that the measure succeeded… not because I harbor any silly notions that this country has progressed beyond the point of denying any single group of people their civil rights… but because in my mind, if this thing was going to fail, California’s the state that would be most likely to drop-kick it.

Clearly I was wrong, but I suppose that’s neither here nor there.

What really got me going is how the stupid Proposition passed.

It wouldn’t have been any less a shame had the super-right evangelical Christians managed to pass it on their own… but it certainly would have hurt my heart a lot less.

I mean, it’s expected that those guys would be overzealous in their support of such a shameful piece of crap… merely masking itself as bona-fide legislation.

Let’s face it- the Christian right has no qualms about shoving their religion down the rest of our throats… that whole seperation of Church and State thing only applies to non-Christians in their minds… as in, if you ain’t Christian, don’t you dare even try to legislate shit.

Otherwise, it’s cool.

But folks, it wasn’t simply the Christian-Right that passed the same-sex marriage ban.

It was minorities.

As in blacks and latinos.

Huh.

A group of people, oppressed for generations… still fighting daily for their own civil rights… helped pass a piece of shit law that takes one of the fundamental freedoms that they themselves enjoy away from an entire group of people.

It wasn’t so long ago that black people didn’t have the freedom to choose their marital partners either… have we already forgotten our not-too-distant-past when blacks were banned from marrying whites?

Hell, in Alabama that shit was still illegal into the 21st century!

I am disgusted.

What harm does it do a damn one of us, allowing two people to who love each other- even if they are the same sex- to get married? In what ways do our lives become negatively impacted by two committed adults choosing to celebrate their love and commitment for each other by making that bond official?

None.

The rest of us can do it…

… So why can’t gay people?

I get that this has to do with religion for a lot of people… but to those same people I say, mind your own damn business. If you disagree with the notion of two people of the same sex marrying, then don’t do it… never forget, however, that you are not God… you do not get to judge… and you certainly have no business judging the choices of others.

Besides, why are we picking and choosing which parts of the Bible to subscribe to? How many people have even read the book of Leviticus, the book they base their justification to discriminate against homosexuals on?

I am reminded of a letter I once read… written to conservative talk-show host, Dr. Laura Schlesinger. Dr. Laura had caught some heat for her disparaging comments about homosexuals.

The author brings up many good points:

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. How should I deal with this?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as it suggests in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may buy slaves from the nations that are around us. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans but not Canadians. Can you clarify?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 10:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this?

Lev. 20:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear prescription glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

If the supporters of Proposition 8 spent half the energy on making their own marriages successful as they do trying to dictate everyone else’s lifestyles, perhaps our hetrosexual divorce rate would drop a bit.

God, I’m certain, doesn’t give a shit how we manage to achieve an orgasm…

…He has bigger fish to fry, and so do we.

It Isn’t Just About the Politicians…

One of the fun aspects of a national election is getting to see some of the issues the voters in various states are grappling with.

Here are some of the interesting things I’ve seen tonight:

  1. Massechussetts has voted to decriminalize marijuana
  2. Michigan has voted to legalize medical marijuana
  3. The proposed abortion ban has failed in South Dakota
  4. Colorado has decided that human life does not begin at fertilization

This election is full of hot-button issues… from the very top of the ballot, where we must make the decision as to who our next president will be, along with choosing between various gubernatorial candidates, potential senators, representatives… all the way down.

States are dealing with such controversial subjects as same-sex marriage, stem cell research, abortion, affirmative action and the legalization of marijuana.

In Washington, voters are weighing whether or not to legalize physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill patients.

Wowsers.

Never a dull moment.
