Price Gouging in Wake of Sandy

… And in the “business owners can be total jerks that love to profit off of human tragedies” category, we have this gem straight from NJ:

MYFOXNY.COM –

The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs issued subpoenas to 65 businesses across the state Friday after more than 500 consumer complaints about alleged price gouging.

“Having seen firsthand the suffering people are experiencing, I assure New Jersey’s residents and retailers that we are taking a zero-tolerance approach to price gouging,” said Governor Christie. “We are not asking businesses to function as charities. We require that they obey New Jersey’s laws – or pay significant penalties.”

Attorney General Chiesa noted that the Division has received allegations of price gouging from all regions of the state, with complaints particularly prominent in Bergen, Essex, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Passaic counties. The top complaint categories are:

-Gasoline, with gas prices in some cases allegedly rising by $1 or more per gallon immediately following the storm, in some cases allegedly exceeding $5 per gallon. The Division has also received complaints about gas stations charging more to fill up hand-held canisters than to fill car gas tanks, in apparent violation of state Motor Fuels Act protections related to fuel prices.

-Generators, Batteries and Non-Gasoline Fuels such as propane; with generator prices allegedly doubling from pre-storm prices.

-Food, including reports of unexpectedly high prices at convenience stores and restaurants in certain areas, affecting consumers who are unable to cook a hot meal at home due to power outages.

-Lodging, including complaints about hotels and motels significantly raising their prices, allegedly for rooms that were rented at much lower rates before the storm.

Consumers who suspect price gouging or any other violation of consumer protection laws, particularly as a result of Hurricane Sandy, are urged to call the Division of Consumer Affairs at  (800) 242-5846.

GOP, Law and Order, and Straight Up Panic

So I know every last one of us are watching the dog and pony show Republican National Convention each and every night with bated breath…

Right?

Of course we are.

So last night (Tuesday), we heard from a whole buncha folks, including our own esteemed Prez Bush (via satellite- he wasn’t coming anywhere near this thing was monitoring the Hurricane Gustav situation from the White House).

My favorite speaker of the night was Fred Thompson (no, no, not Lieberman… he’s not Christian).

Did I like what Thompson had to say?

Well, you know…

Like is such a strong word…

… But I tell you what, I won’t view those Law and Order reruns on TNT the same way ever again!

What really struck me about his speech were his comments about how he believes Sara Palin was a great choice for veep, and that liberals are in a panic over McCain’s choice.

I laughed.

Oh wait- he was being serious?

I’m sorry… I thought he was being funny…

I love how the GOP is talkin’ out of both sides of their mouths right about now…

Cuz it was just today, actually, that two Republican pundits- Peggy Noonan and Mike Murphy- were caught on tape ‘disparaging’ Mrs. Palin.

“It’s over,” Noonan said.

When Chuck Todd asked her if this was the most qualified woman the Republicans could nominate, Noonan responded, “The most qualified? No. I think they went for this, excuse me, political bullshit about narratives. Every time the Republicans do that, because that’s not where they live and that’s not what they’re good at, they blow it.”

Murphy characterized the choices as “cynical” and “gimmicky.”

Seems like perhaps good ol’ Fred Thompson got it backwords, eh?

Personally, I’m not panicking in the slightest…

Looks like the GOP’s all over that particular market.

Gustav Has Arrived

As Hurricane Gustav pounds the Gulf, I want to send my thoughts and prayers to those affected.

It seems that the same levy that breached in 2005 (the Industrial Canal Levee) in New Orleans has again breached, though in a different area than before.

Again, the 9th Ward is beginning to flood.

It is my hope that enough lessons were learned from Hurricane Katrina that we will not see even a fraction of the devastation we previously witnessed.

I worry- hearing that many of the levees were never fully repaired from 2005, and those that were worked on, were merely built back up to pre-Katrina levels.

Hopefully we are not set to witness history repeat itself.
