Mike Tyson, Donald Trump and the ’80s Icons

Oh. Ma. Jesus.

In the “this election cannot be for real” category, we learn Mike Tyson has endorsed Donald Trump for President.

He’s confident Trump is just an “average guy, like everyone else” who needs “time to grow”. He also doesn’t think The Donald means what he says about immigrants and Latinos.

Trump obviously meant every word he said. When someone shows you their true colors, believe them.

Looks to me like this is just one ’80s icon giving support to another ’80s icon, giving no thought whatsoever to any actual political issues and social challenges we’re facing today.

As in, 2015.

Sarah Palin, Resignation and Basketball

I just finished listening to Sarah Palin’s resignation speech, from start to finish.

Wowsers.

After almost 7 full minutes of rambling… and not a whole lot of sense-making, we learn that she is stepping down as Governor of Alaska.

It was quite disjointed, from strange basketball analogies to promises to affect political change for Alaska outside of politics, to my personal favorite, how she put her political future to her kids for a vote.

When asking them if she should resign, she got “4 yeahs and a resounding HELL YEAH”, and apparently it was the hell yeah that sealed the deal.

Man oh man.

Later, after spending the entire speech knocking politics, and complaining about how horrible mainstream media has been to her family and how this experience has basically ruined her life and the lives of her children, she  says, “I don’t want to discourage anyone from entering politics”.

Oh ok.

As long as she’s encouraging others not to give up their dreams to follow in her footsteps so that they, too, can live in their own personal hell as a result, I’m cool. (Read: Sarcasm)

The entire ordeal is bizarre, and despite the fact that Sarah Palin has never been one to make a whole lot of sense while speaking, I am still a bit shocked.

Some insiders say Palin is resigning to begin preparing for either a 2010 U.S. Senate race or is gearing up for the top-dog position of POTUS, come 2012.

I say if she truly wanted either of those, the last thing she should have done is step down as governor, having not even completed her first term.

Palin is addressing a nation, a nation in which members of her own party refused to vote for the ticket on which she was listed, because of her lack of political experience.

I don’t think “Resigned as Governor prior to completion of first term” is really a bullet she should want to have placed on her resume, should national politics be her ultimate goal.

What party would she run under?

The Party of “When the Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going”?

Call me cynical, but considering that she was unable to complete a single term as governor of a state in which there are fewer residents than New York City, I find it hard to imagine her next stop will be Leader of the Free World.

Even Republicans are scratching their heads, with one Senator, Lisa Murkowski, releasing a statement regarding her “disappointment” that Governor Palin has chosen to “abandon” Alaska.

There are other rumors, of course. The media has gone berserk, speculating on the various reasons why Palin really chose to step down. Right now they’re running the gambit from an unexpected pregnancy, to speculation that she has a new book deal- the financial numbers of which she would have to disclose to the state, to rumors of a very damaging criminal investigation against her.

I’m not surprised, given the reasons she stated during her press conference really amounted to nothing more than rambling. The effect was the impression of a woman trying to pull a fast one, having no intention of explaining the real motivation for her decision, instead choosing to fill dead air with a bunch of nonsense that made little, if any, sense at all.

Personally, I don’t know that the reasons for Palin’s resignation really matter too much.

The bottom line is that had she truly planned to descend on the scene, making her mark in national politics, she has just shot herself in the foot.

Abandoning ship prior to reaching the agreed-upon destination (the end of her term) was political suicide.

For her own sake, I hope the rumblings of her various insiders are true- and that Palin is leaving politics for good. Not because I’m not a fan of Palin’s, but because I believe her choosing to step down as Governor, regardless of what her ultimate designs were, has spelled the end of her political career.

I’m sure as the days develop we’ll get more clarification about this most unconenventional development.

Until then, looks like things are gettin’ kinda deep up there in Alaska.

Abortion Docs, Jew Haters, Extremism and the GOP

Let’s just jump right in, cuz I really do have a lot to say.

Today I have right-wing extremism on my mind… something I’ve been mulling over lately… and something that truly makes my blood run cold.

It’s terrifying.

… And it’s escalating quickly.

Since Barack Obama descended on the scene with his eye turned to the presidency, we have seen this country’s lunatics come out in full force.

During the campaign we heard about assassination plots, accusations of Obama’s false ties to Muslim terror groups, chants and rants at Republican rallies calling for his death and accusations of treason.

Talk about foreshadowing… we all saw it unfolding. Most of us understood, upon witnessing the GOP presidential candidate and his running mate’s unwillingness to condemn the behavior (until it was much too late, that is), that the worst was yet to come.

We were right.

Now, within the past couple of weeks, we have learned of the brutal murders of Dr. George Tiller, an American abortion doctor and of another fellow American- a security guard named Steven T. Johns– at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC.

Both men were murdered by right-wing extremists- Tiller was killed by a well known pro-life advocate, Johns died at the hands of an 88 year old white supremacist and anti-semite.

The killers have been charged with murder, but inexplicably, neither men have been charged with any counts of terrorism. If these terrible acts of violence against Americans do not qualify as domestic terrorism, nothing does.

Perhaps as terrifying as the crazy people perpetrating this violence are the powerful “main stream” conservatives behind them, the people who in essence stir the pot… and then sit back, showing false horror, as it all comes to a boil. These are people you’ve all heard of… many of you even support their political and religious beliefs…

… Millions of you voted for at least two of them to become your next president and vice president, and you allow the others into your homes and cars by way of television and radio each and every day.

You know exactly who I am referring to.

John McCain, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly and friends did not single-handedly cause the recent bloodshed on American soil by right-wing extremists.

They did, however, incite much of the ugliness we see today, and those that didn’t incite it, stood back and did nothing to cause the boiling pot to simmer, or cool off.

As a result, it has boiled over.

Now that these so-called leaders have stirred and heated up what I’ll call the “Crazy Pot”- essentially giving psychotic people a free pass- morally, at least- to terrorize and kill, they sit back, feigning shock and confusion… doing their very best to distract us from the facts- the fact that they are contributing to a violently divided nation.

It’s almost as if in realizing that their own party is falling apart, they have made the decision to fight- not to save the GOP or our very nation- but to take every last one of us down with them.

I do not understand the lack of outrage.

Where is the anger from my fellow Americans, both Conservative and Liberal alike?

I posted a piece on this site yesterday about David Letterman’s inappropriate comments regarding Willow Palin, Sarah Palin’s 14 year old daughter. I received hundreds of hits on that particular post alone, and the moral outrage seen in my comments section was mind-boggling.

Letterman’s joke was idiotic, and it wasn’t funny… but he didn’t kill anyone.

Why are people more enraged that he, a late night talk show host who makes his living by telling off-color jokes, made a stupid comment, than they are about the fact that two Americans were brutally murdered by politically motivated right-wing nutjobs, mere days apart?

It appears that certain conservatives in this country are so busy being pissed off at those who do not share their same beliefs, that they have missed the forest for the trees.

People are being murdered, and last time I checked, regardless of political or religious affiliation, Americans generally agree that murder is reprehensible. So many of these same people would willingly lynch David Letterman for telling his stupid jokes… while simultaneously looking the other way when members of their own party are killing others.

Prior to Dr. Tiller’s death, for example, Bill O’Reilly was igniting viewers’ anger by referring to him repeatedly as a “mass murderer”, “Tiller the Baby Killer”, and claiming that his abortion clinic was a “death mill”. After Tiller’s murder, O’Reilly mostly toned back his hateful rhetoric- even acknowledging that Dr. Tiller was breaking no laws, but did not address- not a single time- all the right wingers out there that dared celebrate the horrific death of a fellow American.

He showed no real outrage at this violent act of terrorism.

He simply did a lot of back-pedaling, hoping that in doing so, America would not see his (inadvertant) role in this tragedy.

O’Reilly did not shoot Dr. Tiller, but he helped incite the violence and hatred that ultimately led to his death.

This is a disturbingly common trend, and it is downright horrifying.

If half of the people who expressed such outrage at, say, Letterman’s dumb jokes, showed that sort of contempt over the events that led to these two dead Americans, our country would perhaps be in slightly less dire straits.

How disgustingly terrifying.

Joe Lieberman Needs Joe the Plumber… And Fast

Lieberman, Lieberman, Lieberman!

What in the world are we going to do with you?

Initially I was thinking Lieberman was the king of all flip-floppers… a man without a home… changing parties at the rate normal people change their underwear… just looking for some love.

To summarize…

Senator Lieberman started out as the star of the Democratic Party, a Senator from Connecticut- a liberal with regards to many social issues (abortion rights, gay and lesbian rights) rising through the ranks to the level of Al Gore’s 2000 running mate.

He was the first Jewish person on a major party’s presidential ticket.

He is also the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Lieberman, while in the senate, voted with Democrats most of the time, but quickly emerged during the Bush Administration as a strong supporter of the War in Iraq… and has been an extremely vocal advocate of Israel.

The 2000 presidential race, as we all know, didn’t work out so well for the Democrats, so back to the senate Lieberman went… only this time as an Independent.

In 2002, Lieberman co-sponsored a bill in the Senate, a pro-Israel bill (Senate Resolution 247), notoriously tying Israel to the ongoing Middle East controversy.

He famously shouted, from the Senate floor, “You are either with us or with the terrorists”.

By “us”, one can only surmise, he meant Israel.

Lieberman went on to campaign- hard- for John McCain, as he ran for President.

His support of McCain is, at least in part, due to the Republicans’ no-questions-asked, complete and total support of all things Israel.

Barack Obama, meanwhile, won the election and has named a Jewish man his Chief of Staff- Rahm Emanuel.

Now Lieberman is back home in Congress, meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid… trying to convince Reid that he really is a good boy, and deserves another chance to serve the Democratic caucus.

Reid, unfortunately, isn’t nearly as excited as Lieberman had hoped…

… So Lieberman goes running to the GOP, which offers him a position with their caucus.

Lieberman doesn’t accept the position, though he doesn’t turn it down either, and instead looks back to the Democrats to see if they’d like to up the anty a bit, and beg for his return.

Huh.

It’s enough to make your head spin.

What I needed to know is why all this is happening.

Why is Joe Lieberman all over the damn place? How come he just won’t sit still?

Is he a man made of jello, a man who goes wherever he feels the winds of victory are blowing at the time, or is it something deeper than that?

The answer, I have learned, is simple… and can be summed up in a single word:

Israel.

Lieberman puts his country before party…

Which would be cool…

Except…

… Lieberman’s country is Israel, not America.

Scandalous!

Lieberman goes where the friends of Israel go.

This notion was the driving force behind his support of the War in Iraq… it was his motivation to campaign for John McCain during the Presidential election… and his reason for trying to re-join the Democratic caucus once Obama named a Jewish guy as his Chief of Staff.

He was willing to trade in his social-liberal hat- and simply forget about such things as women’s rights, as long as his beloved Israel would benefit.

Now Lieberman is thinking his country– again, we aren’t talking about America- isn’t in as much danger as he thought it would be, with the election of Obama, after all.

Hmm… Suddenly Obama’s looking like he might just be a friend to Israel, not a sworn enemy.

… Guess those liberals weren’t so terrible after all… in fact, they’re starting to look better than ever…

Unfortunately for Lieberman, he may have thrown the Democrats under the bus one time too many.

Quite frankly, we may not be interested in having him around anymore.

He could, of course, accept the GOP’s offer to join their caucus… but what good would it do?

The Republicans no longer have any power in the House or the Senate… and after January 20th, they won’t even have a President who’s willing to even try to do their bidding anymore.

Any good he could hope to do for Israel would have to get through both the legislative and executive branches… branches that are now controlled by Democrats.

Whatever he could come up with would likely be viewed through the eyes of people who feel he has betrayed them.

Joe, it seems, could use a plumber.

… As it looks like he’s been flushed right on down the toilet.

The Elephants Are Locking Horns…

Oh boo-hoo.

The GOP doesn’t approve of the people Obama has picked for his staff thus far, and is throwing a temper tantrum as a result.

Yeah.

Cuz that’s effective.

Perhaps the Republican Party would be better served by going to sit in their collective corners and doing some deep thinking about the mess they’ve caused, and how they plan to clean it up.

A time-out, if you will.

Since they lost the election, I have yet to hear a single prominent Republican say anything that even remotely resembles the soul-searching the party so desperately needs.

I’ve heard the blame game- it’s all Sarah Palin’s fault… it’s all John McCain’s fault… it’s all Barack Obama’s fault… it’s all the liberals’ faults…

… No one seems to be saying what everyone else (if they have half a brain, anyway) already knows.

The GOP is dying a slow, painful death.

At the end of its days, much like a wounded animal, the only thing they were capable of doing was attacking.

Their purpose became about hopelessness… negativity, fear and ugliness.

The American people have spoken, and in casting our votes November 4th, stated in no uncertain terms that we are sick of it.

If the Republican Party is to survive- and let’s face it, I won’t be crying any tears if it doesn’t- the only way for it to happen is for them to back up, close their mouths, and listen.

Listen to the members of their own party who voted for Obama… voted for new- democratic- representatives in Congress over the old- conservative- incumbents… they voted for change.

They voted for hope.

The GOP will need to stop the finger pointing, and look within themselves so that they can figure out how in the world they allowed a scary, closed-minded and bigoted- albeit fringe- minority become the most vocal and easily seen face of who they are.

They wanted us to think the Boogey-Man was alive and well in Barack Obama when in fact, the Boogey-Man was them.

Sarah Palin, Africa and “the Southern Part of the Country”

For those of you who are sad that John McCain/Sarah Palin lost the election, perhaps this report will make you feel a little better about the way things turned out.

It appears that Sarah Palin never knew Africa was a continent.

She thought it was a country, and that when people refer to “South Africa”, they were merely referring to the southern portion of the country of Africa…

… Not realizing that South Africa is a country itself.

Wow.

Unbelievable, I know.

Now before you start hoppin’ up and down, yelling about the liberal mainstream media, let me first explain that the source of this information is none other than Fox News.

In fact, it was Fox News’ own chief political correspondent, Carl Cameron, that gave us this delightful morsel of information to begin with.

She didn’t understand, McCain aides told me, that Africa was a continent and not a country and actually asked them if South Africa wasn’t just part of the country as opposed to a country in the continent…

To think that this woman is actually taken seriously by anyone at all chills me to my core.

Realizing that there is, as we speak, a political machine that is gearing up for this woman’s 2012 presidential bid is even worse.

Burn, Baby, Burn

Firefighters worked to prevent the blaze in Springfield from spreading to houses. While many of us are still flying high, allowing the fact that we just elected our first black president to sink in…

Others seem hell-bent on reminding us that such an historic moment comes with its share of challenges.

Simply put, there are still plenty of jackasses out there.

From Massechussetts we hear the story of a predominantly black church, still under construction, being burnt to the ground mere hours after Barack Obama became our president elect.

If this story conjures up images from 45 years ago, it should.

We have made enormous progress in this country, but we cannot allow Tuesday night’s victory to inflict amnesia upon us, causing us to forget the very real racial challenges we still face in this great- albeit divided- nation.

It Isn’t Just About the Politicians…

One of the fun aspects of a national election is getting to see some of the issues the voters in various states are grappling with.

Here are some of the interesting things I’ve seen tonight:

  1. Massechussetts has voted to decriminalize marijuana
  2. Michigan has voted to legalize medical marijuana
  3. The proposed abortion ban has failed in South Dakota
  4. Colorado has decided that human life does not begin at fertilization

This election is full of hot-button issues… from the very top of the ballot, where we must make the decision as to who our next president will be, along with choosing between various gubernatorial candidates, potential senators, representatives… all the way down.

States are dealing with such controversial subjects as same-sex marriage, stem cell research, abortion, affirmative action and the legalization of marijuana.

In Washington, voters are weighing whether or not to legalize physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill patients.

Wowsers.

Never a dull moment.

The Drama Begins To Unfold…

As the polls are closing, stories are rolling in.

As wonderful and historic as this day is, the news isn’t solely roses and rainbows.

In Florida, a swing state, we hear the tale of a polling station in Deerfield Beach.

This is a predominantly black area of the state, and as the polls opened at 7 a.m., there were already over 400 people in line.

The problem?

There was only a single voting machine to accomodate all of them.

ACORN, Bogus Scandals and Registration Fraud

We need to talk about voter fraud for a minute.

This shit is getting on my nerves.

On the one side we have ACORN… and accusations that they are registering dead people, Scooby-Doo, Donald Duck and the pet goldfish.

On the other side we have organizations like Voter Outreach of America, a group which has been systematically destroying democratic voter registrations.

Huh.

So without condoning either tactic…

… Which is the method that will cause the most… or hell, any … damage?

Would it be the false voter registrations that will not result in a single bogus vote cast (unless some super-suave Democrat can manage to convince the volunteers at the polls that he is, in fact, Donald Duck)?

Or the destroyed registrations of actual citizens, who will find out on November 4th, when attempting to excercise their Constitutional right to vote, that they are not actually registered?

Kind of a no-brainer, dontcha think?

Ronald Michaelson, a McCain advisor, recently bemoaned the risks of fraudulent voter registrations by ACORN

… They want you to believe the possibility exists that because of a few employees’ pranks, the entire election is in jeopardy…

Yet when pressed, he was unable to cite a single example of ACORN’s shenanigans resulting in even one fraudulently cast vote.

Not a single one.

That’s cuz… uh… ACORN’s registration challenges have yet to extend to the polls.

ACORN’s problems are more on the financial side of things… they made the mistake of paying their workers by the number of registrations they submitted, instead of by the hour.

I can’t imagine voter registrators (is that even a word?) get paid a ton of money as it is… so I can see how the pressure would be on to register dead people and Disney characters.

The organization needs to investigate the allegations, fire the schmucks who are registering goldfish and move on. Hell, ACORN’s losing money in this deal as it is… they paid these jerks to register all their imaginary friends… so they aren’t benefitting from any of this at all.

On the flip side we have a group of Republicans, ostensibly registering anyone and everyone who is both eligible to vote and interested in voting… regardless of party line… diligently destroying the registrations of people who likely will not vote for John McCain.

In this case, we have names– actual victims whose ripped up registrations were pulled out of the trash can by a disgruntled Voter Outreach of America employee…

… voters like Daren Gray.

He wasn’t happy to learn that his registration never quite made it in.

Perhaps McCain, his cronies and his supporters, should be careful of who they choose to criticize… and be a little more mindful of the scandals they seek to create.

Just sayin’.

Otherwise that shit might just blow up in their faces.
